Laminar Flow Elements.

Laminar flow element (LFE) meters are often referred to as viscous flow meters, they operate on a capillary flow principal to produce a differential pressure that is linear to flow rate. Each meter is supplied with a ‘Meter Factor’ giving the relationship between pressure head across the meter element and the volume flow rate. They offer excellent turn down ratio’s and have for a number of years been used to measure internal combustion engine combustion airflow and for equipment calibration. They are not sensitive to high frequency pulsations that can often affect other airflow measurement techniques e.g. vortex shedding meters. This is particularly important for turbo or super charged engines.

Measurement of the differential pressure across the LFE is key to the overall accuracy of the measured airflow, these can be supplied with one of the flowing analogue outputs; 0-5V, 1-5V or 4-20mA. RS485 digital connection is also supplied as standard.

We off a complete maintenance and traceable calibration service for the Meriam LFE’s and typically recommend a 6 or 12-month interval depending on application and usage. We offer Meriam LFE meters, these have proven to be robust, easily to install, accurate and cost affective. They are available for hire or purchase in a range of capacities and configurations. The most popular configuration is a LFE supplied with an integral air filter and a close coupled differential pressure transducer with a combined calibration. The LFE can also be supplied without an air filter for inline low-pressure applications.

Sizing the LFE to the application is particularly important and we would be please to discuss this. Below are the nominal flow ranges of the Meriam LFE available. Download PDF of this article.
